I often compare

I often compare my attempts at meditation to pushing a boat down the beach into the water: One pushes and pushes, till suddenly it is afloat and the current catches it. I can stay a long time in this state - floating on the current.

When life seems chaotic

When life seems chaotic, you don't need people giving you easy answers or cheap promises. There might not be any answers to your problems. What you need is a safe place where you can bounce with people who have taken some bad hops of their own.

Life's dirty

Life's dirty. Life's unclean you know. It's birth, it's sex, it's the intestinal tract. One big squishy, unsanitary mess. It never gets any cleaner either. You know, dust to dust, worms crawl in, worms crawl out, right? Even though we know that, we still walk the walk, we still live the life. We're like a bunch of little kids. Little kids, you know, we jump in this big old pond of mud and we're slapping it all over our face, rubbing our hair all down our backs and we're making these glorious, gooey, mud pies. That's us.

Ordinarily, when we speak

Ordinarily, when we speak of withdrawal, we think of having a substance removed from us. We give up alcohol, drugs, sugar, fats, caffeine, nicotine - and we suffer withdrawal. It's useful to view creative withdrawal a little differently. We ourselves are the substance we withdraw to, not from, as we pull our over extended and misplaced creative energy back into our own core.

We need to find God

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.

A human being

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.

~Albert Einstein

~Alice, Alice in Wonderland

the very word grow

...the very word grow is a word appropriate to children. After a certain age you do not grow. You don’t grow teeth, you don’t grow muscles. If you start growing after that age it’s cancer…becoming more and more oneself – the actual experience of it is a shrinking, in that very often it’s a dehydration, a loss of inflations, a loss of illusions…Shedding pseudoskins, crusted stuff that you’ve accumulated. Shedding dead wood. That’s one of the big sheddings. Things that don’t work anymore, that is that don’t keep you alive. Sets of ideas that you’ve had too long….Anytime you’re gonna grow, you’re gonna lose something…

Merciful Father

Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things. This was not among them. But at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well. There's a dark side

There's a dark side to each and every human soul. We wish we were Obi-Wan Kenobi, and for the most part we are, but there's a little Darth Vader in all of us. Thing is, this ain't no either-or proposition. We're talking about dialectics, the good and the bad merging into us. You can run but you can't hide. My experience? Face the darkness. Stare it down. Own it. As brother Nietzsche said, being human is a complicated gig. So give that ol' dark night of the soul a hug. Howl the eternal yes!

~Northern Exposure, Chris Stevens

The bread that you cast

The bread that you cast upon the water is the bread that comes back to you. It is not your neighbor's bread; it is your own bread; and if you do not cast it upon the water, there will be no bread to come back to you. All the bread on the water is earmarked for return to the person who has sent it forth.

~The Thirteenth Warrior

And so here I am

And so here I am, 11 o’clock at night, thinking that I finally have the answer that has been eluding me all this time. I do not need to thrash around in my life anymore unless I actually really want to. I do not need other people to come and help me. I do not need a guru, a hypnotist, or a miracle worker. I can, between me and God, find my center and get clear. It can be done.

~Shirley Gibson

Valmiki the Poet

Valmiki the Poet
looked down into water held cupped in his hand and saw into the past.
Before he looked,
he thought the world was sweet poison. Men seemed to be living in lies,
not knowing where their ways went.
The days seemed
made of ignorance and doubt, and cast from deception and illusion.
But in the water
he saw—a dream, a chance,
and a great adventure.
Valmiki trusted the True
and forgot the rest.
He found the whole universe
like a bright jewel
set firm in forgiving and held fast
by love.

~Ramayana

People say

People say what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't think that's what we're really seeking. I think that what we're seeking is an experience of being alive so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.

~Joseph Campbell

There is more

There is more to life than increasing its speed.

~Mohandes Gandhi

From what I can tell

From what I can tell, God is particularly averse to the concept of the free ride, and he goes to great lengths to make sure that people who have settled comfortably into their wonderfully-fulfilling-lives-which-are-ultimately-to-be-rewarded-with-a-trip-to-heaven get their reality check.

~Grace Gibson

People usually consider

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle.
